Sgt. Timothy Hippler, a point man with force reconnaissance platoon, shoots a .45-caliber pistol during close quarter tactics shooting at Kaneohe Bay range training facility, May 13. Capt. M17A1/A2 worn by Greek infantry.
The US M17 series of gas masks were first introduced in 1959. The mask was very revolutionary for it’s time, with a main goal of using larger, less heavy filters that didn’t decentralize the centre of gravity, and therefor reduce risks that where present with the M9 series.
The result was a facepiece that incorporated so called cheek filters, under the actual facepiece, placing them on the inside of the mask.
The masks feature triangular lenses, like most US masks at the time, a fabric head harness and a voicemitter.
In 1966 the mask was updated and given the new designation M17A1.
The most notable new features was the added drinking device, and a so called resuscitation tube. The tube, seen as a tiny outgrowth on the right side of the exhale assembly (as seen from the outside of the mask) was meant to be used for CPR of injured soldiers without having to remove your mask and expose yourself to what ever harmfull substance that might be in the air.
Because of the major security risks that this tube caused, the idea was scrapped in 1983. The tube was simply removed and the mask was redesignated as the M17A2.
The mask was replaced by the M40 in the 90’s because of it’s obvious security flaws. Changing the filters was impossible in the heat of battle, not only because they where on the inside of the mask, but they where extremely hard to actually replace. The rubber wasn’t textured either, so when the sweat started to pour, which it would, the seal was compromised.
